UNB Takes on Canadian University Chess Championship

On February 19 and 20, 2022, The UNB Mathematics Society sent one team of four chess enthusiasts to the Canadian University Chess Championship (CUCC) hosted by the University of Western Ontario Chess & Go Club. The team consisted of Marie Petersen (Psychology), Tyler MacLean (Computer Science), Ryan Whitney (Engineering) and Joshua Makarov (Economics). Whitney and Makarov were our only two CFC rated players with ratings of 1560 and 1608 respectively.

Overall, it was a very good learning experience for our players. For Petersen and MacLean, this was their first time competing in such a high-rank tournament. After competing in CUCC, however, both became more familiar with the competitive chess scene. Makarov won every round played, and Whitney had one win and one draw. We are excited for these players to return to play in our very own Chess Tournament at UNB after March Break.
